Colorado football coach Mike MacIntyre orchestrated one of the great turnarounds in college football this season. The Buffaloes went 10-4, earning their first double-digit win season since 2001.

For that, MacIntyre is being rewarded with a contract extension. On Monday, Colorado and MacIntyre agreed to a three-year extension that will keep the reigning Associated Press Coach of the Year in Boulder until 2021.

His previous deal was through 2018. MacIntyre will make $3.18 million in 2017 and will receive annual raises. The total value of the rest of the contract is $16.25 million spread across five years.

“I am ecstatic that we will be at University of Colorado for the foreseeable future, there’s no place my family and I would rather be,” MacIntyre said in a press release. “We absolutely love it here, the people have been great and I truly believe this is just the beginning.”

This was MacIntyre’s fourth season at Colorado. He went 10-27 his first three seasons, but in 2016 he matched that win total and helped the Buffaloes to their first bowl appearance since 2007 and a Pac-12 South division championship.

“I am blessed to be entrusted with such an incredible group of young men and a staff who have fought to lay a foundation for this football program,” MacIntyre added.  “The support from the administration has been tremendous, as has the enthusiasm from the fans. Together we have come together to accomplish something special. The future is bright for Colorado football.”
