Denver Broncos recently hired special teams coordinator Brock Olivo addressed the media for the first time Tuesday, and the 40-year-old who came here by way of the division-rival Kansas City Chiefs wasted little time in dropping acronyms like they were the highest-grade napalm.
“We’re gonna K.I.L.L. it, OK?" he said of his approach to coaching special teams, via BSNDenver. "This is a great acronym, you guys, right? K.I.L.L. it: Keep it likable and learnable.”
That's remarkable dissonance between the acronym and what it stands for. Twelve out of 10 on that scale.
Olivo, who starred at the University of Missouri as a running back and special teams player, is the rare professional football coach who earned a degree in English. He left Missouri as the school's all-time leader in rushing yards (a record that's since been broken) and went on to coach in Italy, the United Football League and at Coastal Carolina.
He spent the last three seasons as the assistant special teams coach under Chiefs special teams coordinator, Dave Toub. Toub, who interviewed for the Broncos head coaching job that Vance Joseph got, is regarded as one of the best special teams coordinators in football.
Toub's penchant for developing acronyms is less of a known quantity. It's unclear if Olivo honed his acronym skills under Toub's guidance or on his own.
