Hulu has a new live TV service for $40 a month, but you can’t watch the local Denver sports networks on it

Many of the national sports networks are available on Hulu’s new TV package. But you’re still going to have to gain access to watching the Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche on TV through your local cable provider.

Want to watch live TV but don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it?

On Wednesday, Hulu announced a live TV service that lets people watch 50 channels — in addition to the regular Hulu library that includes 3,500 TV and film titles — for $39.99 a month.

The good news: You get access to a popular and diverse set of channels on Android, iOS, Apple TV, Chromecast and Xbox One, and it's a cheaper alternative to cable.

The bad news: ABC, FOX and NBC are not available if you live in Denver, and neither are ROOT or Altitude, the two local sports networks that carry Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche games.

Only five metropolitan areas get access to the four major broadcast networks — FOX, NBC, ABC and CBS. Those areas are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose.

Hulu also said some regional sports networks, such as YES in New York, are available. That's not the case in Denver. Many of the national sports networks are available on Hulu's new TV package, as you can see below. But to watch the Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche on TV, you'll still need to go through your local cable provider.
