The Denver Broncos are among the most successful franchises in professional football since John Elway became the organization's executive vice president and general manager in January 2011.
Starting in 2012, Elway's first full season in that role, Denver has gone 59-21 in the regular season, made four playoff appearances and won one Super Bowl.
Few franchises — certainly the Patriots and perhaps the Seahawks? — have a comparable track record in that time frame. Which is why it's strange that Elway, who also quarterbacked Denver to two Super Bowl wins as a player, still hasn't worked out a new deal with the Broncos entering the final season of his contract.
"We continue to work at it," Elway said Tuesday, per ABC7. "I don't see any problems with that. I don't think there will be any doubt" that it will get done before the season begins.
The Broncos open their season against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 11 in a Monday Night Football matchup.
Elway has had a busy offseason. Gary Kubiak stepped down as head coach, citing health issues, before the 2016 season was even over. Elway helped conduct a search for Kubiak's successor. He wound up choosing Vance Joseph.

With roughly three and a half months to go until the season opener, Elway sounded confident he and the organization will be able to get something done to allow him to continue as executive vice president and general manager.
"This will always be my home," Elway said. "I am not going anywhere."
