Kyle Freeland was 3 years old the last time someone threw a no-hitter at Coors Field. On Sept. 17, 1996, Hideo Nomo made it nine innings without surrendering a hit in a 9-0 Dodgers win. Since then, no pitcher has been able to accomplish the feat.
Freeland, now 24 and a rookie with the Rockies, nearly joined Nomo in that exclusive club Sunday. He made it 8 1/3 innings in a 10-0 Rockies' win over the White Sox before finally surrendering a hit to Melky Cabrera.
Freeland came two batters away from becoming the first-ever Rockies pitcher to throw a no-no at Coors Field. He'd exit the game after throwing 126 pitches, striking out nine, walking one and allowing the lone hit to Cabrera.
Freeland's performance helped the Rockies improve to 52-39 as they head into the All-Star break. At the stopping point, Freeland leads Colorado in innings pitched (107 1/3) and has a 3.77 ERA.
