UPDATE, May 17, 2019: Voodoo Doughnut confirmed in a press release this week that it will open a second location at 98 S. Broadway.
Famous Pizza has served up slices and pies at 98 S. Broadway for over four decades, and while its closure has been announced at least once before, an employee at the store said it's really, really real this time.
Alejandra Solis, working behind the counter at the shop this weekend, said Famous Pizza will close before Sept. 1, although she didn't know an exact date. She said a doughnut store would be moving in, and an employee who didn't give his name added that it would be Voodoo Doughnut.
Kelly Greene, president of Urban Legend Retail, a commercial real estate broker, confirmed that Voodoo Doughnut would be the new tenant in the space where Famous Pizza currently operates as well as the currently vacant space next door, and said that an official announcement was forthcoming.
"I think it's a game changer for the whole area really," he said. "They have such an incredible following."
Asked about a new shop on South Broadway, Voodoo Doughnut marketing manager Sara Heise declined to comment.
"We're definitely looking in the area but we don't have anything confirmed," she said.
Denver's original Voodoo Doughnut opened at 1520 E. Colfax Ave. in 2013.
