A 30-inch cast iron pipe broke around 3 a.m. Thursday morning near the intersection of E. 9th Avenue and Eudora Street in the Hale neighborhood causing a massive hole to open in the street.

The area is closed from 9th Avenue and Dahlia Street to 9th Avenue and Eudora Street. Crews isolated the break after they responded to a report of water coming through the street, said Denver Water Spokesperson Jose Salas. He also said the gaping hole in the street caused no injuries or accidents.

Salas said crews could finish repairing the pipe in the next six to eight hours and that repairs to the road are currently estimated to take about 24 hours. That could, of course, take longer, he cautioned.

Residents near the Rose Medical Center were not affected. Denver Water wants residents to avoid the area as much as they can.

Salas said it is too early to determine what caused the line to break, but said it could be due to aging pipes or when the temperatures fluctuate from freezing to warm.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
