The Colorado Rockies have hired a new manager. Former Padres skipper and MLB pitcher Bud Black will take over as the seventh manager in franchise history.
Tommy Stokke of FanRag Sports broke the news Sunday night.
Black spent 15 seasons as an MLB pitcher. That pedigree likely played a role in hiring him, as Coors Field is the most difficult pitcher's ballpark in the MLB. Black also managed the Padres from 2007-15. He had a 649-713 overall record in San Diego.
Black takes over for Walt Weiss, who didn't seek a new contract after four seasons with the Rockies. Colorado went 75-87 last season and finished third in the National League West.
Rockies general manager Jeff Bridick has openly said he believes there is enough talent on the roster to make a playoff run in 2017. We'll see if Black can lead them there for the first time since 2009.
