Authorities say a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy shot an armed motorist on the side of a roadway.

Chief Deputy Steve Johnson tells KUSA-TV that Friday’s shooting south of Denver happened after the deputy stopped to assist the motorist.

The man got out of a sport-utility vehicle with what authorities described as an assault rifle.

The deputy ordered the man to drop the rifle, then fired because he feared for his life.

The television station reports the unidentified motorist was undergoing surgery for his injuries. His condition was not immediately available.
